once upon a moving on - 2019

tree.jpg

2019's Moving On theme was children’s literature and stories. The children engaged passionately with the topic, suggesting their favourites for the parade, thinking up fabulous designs with our artists and taking meticulous care in creating their costumes and sculptures for the parade. The result was a fascinating representation of some of the
most vibrant and much loved characters, ideas and fantasy worlds, old and new, from the realms of childhood stories. The Patina story continues and to mark our 18th year, and the 21st year of local youth music organisation Starfish, we came together to create a Young Creatives two day youth festival on 5 and 6 July. The spectacular
Moving On Parade played a major part in the festival, followed that evening by theTwilight Tales storytelling event in the Paddock where we lit up the Moving On structures to create a magical storytelling twilight world for all to enjoy. The festival then continued the next day with the epic Starfish in the Park live music event, which featured our 2019 Patina exhibition.

patina's 18th Birthday!

We announced our 2019 theme by video at our 18th birthday party fundraising event at Lewes Town Hall to which the whole community was invited. People who had been involved in Moving On over the years attended and, given that we were turning 18, local pubs very kindly offered prizes for a “Pubs for Patina” raffle.

Many artists live and work in Lewes district and kindly support us in our mission to provide opportunities for local children in meet and learn from local artists. Illustration playing such an important role in children’s literature, we worked with 16 successful local illustrators to create a digital treasure hunt for children around their studios and venues in and around Lewes. More than 200 children and their families took part in this
exciting journey into the world of illustration.

Christmas lanterns

For Moving On 2019 we hired out handmade lanterns in our “Light Up Lewes” campaign. Over 60 lanterns were hired by shops, businesses and families around town.

twilight tales

To build on our storytelling theme and give the children and the wider community an additional event to enjoy, we organised a free community storytelling festival called “Twilight Tales” in partnership with Starfish music. We employed professional storytellers and were delighted that hundreds of people came along for a magical evening of storytelling under the setting sun.
